Creating Scenery – A Long Winter’s Nap

Hi Friends! I hope your new year has gotten off to a great start and that you’re ready for our next challenge on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. This week our theme is, Winter Blues. For my project, I created a card that reminds me of growing up in Wisconsin when the holidays were over and the earth slept peacefully. Creating scenery using intricate dies isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Yes, putting these little houses together will take a little more time, but the results can be breathtaking. See how I put everything together below. Enjoy!

Also, please don’t forget to stop by January’s guest designer, Amber Sheaves from Pieces of Me to see her latest creation for our challenge. I know you will love it!

Creating A Wintery Scene for Handmade Card Step 1

To begin, I cut a piece of Bristol Watercolor paper and apply Tumbled Glass, Stormy Sky, Faded Jeans and Chipped Sapphireย  Distress Ink using mini ink blending tools. Begin with the lightest colors in the middle, moving to the outer edges as the colors get darker. After blending the colors together, I spritz the piece with water.

Creating A Wintery Scene for Handmade Card Step 2

Cut this piece using the dome die from the Snowglobe #2 die set.

Creating Little Houses with Intricate Dies

To create each house, I cut each piece out of different cardstock. For the body of the houses,ย  I used kraft core paper and sanded each piece to give it a distressed look, The inside window pieces are made from deep yellow cardstock and the window frames are cut from Simon Says Stamp Dark Chocolate cardstock. The base of the house was also cut out of Dark Chocolate cardstock. Below are all the houses and their pieces and on the left is the finished house. For the snow covered roofs on the houses below, I cut those pieces out of white cardstock and went over the edges, very lightly, with Pumice Stone Distress Ink.

Creating Scenery for Handmade Card

To begin building the background scene, I cut the tree line using Tim Holtz Tree Line die out of green kraft core cardstock that has been sanded on the edges. The snow is cut from white cardstock and lightly edged with Pumice Stone Distress Ink.

I adhere the tree line to the base of the dome background.

Next, I adhere the houses and snow. I set this aside and begin creating the second background piece for the card.

Creating Second Background Scene for Handmade Card Step 1

To begin the second background, I cut a piece of canvas cardstock and add Vintage Photo Distress Crayon pigment in random areas. Remember this is canvas paper, so you will see the texture of the paper.

Creating Second Background Scene for Handmade Card Step 2

Next, I add Stormy Sky, Faded Jeans and Chipped Sapphire Distress Crayon pigment in random areas on the piece.

Creating Second Background Scene for Handmade Card Step 3

I blend the colors together by dipping my fingertip in a bit of water and smudging them together.

Creating Second Background Scene for Handmade Card Step 4

I add a bit more Chipped Sapphire Distress Crayon pigment to the edges and blend that in toward the center.

Creating Second Background Scene for Handmade Card Step 5

I add Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink to the edges using a mini ink blending tool.

Creating Second Background Scene for Handmade Card Step 6

When the background is dry, I stencil on Tim Holtz Snowflakes with Wendy Vecchi white embossing paste in random areas.

Creating Second Background Scene for Handmade Card Step 7

When the embossing paste is completely dry, I go over the edges with Black Soot Distress Paint.

Creating Second Background Scene for Handmade Card Step 8

To complete the two backgrounds, I splatter on Paper Artsy Snowflake Fresco Finish Paint that has been thinned with a bit of water. I apply it using the Tim Holtz Splatter Brush.

Handmade Card for Simon Says Stamp Winter Blues Challenge

I complete the card by adhere the two backgrounds together and then adhere that to a piece of Simon Says Stamp Schoolhouse Red cardstock. I adhere that to the top left corner of a piece of cardstock from the Tim Holtz Dapper Paper Stash and then onto a 5-1/4″ x 7-1/4″ piece of Simon Says Stamp Black cardstock. I adhere a couple of branches from the Tim Holtz Small Tattered Florals die set and a couple of ready made white flowers from my stash. To create the sentiment, I use the die piece that is meant to create the bottom of the snowglobe out of black kraft core cardstock. I distress the edges a bit and write the sentiment using a white gel pen.

This completes my card for the Simon Says Stamp Winter Blues challenge. I hope you enjoyed seeing the process and that you join in all the fun this week. Remember, you could win a $50 gift voucher to Simon’s amazing store. See ya there!
