Shaker Card – Journey Together 2018

Hi Everyone! I hope you all had an amazing Christmas and had some time to join us for our last challenge of the year which ran for two weeks. It’s a new year and I’m looking forward to Simon Says Stamp Mixed Media Monday challenges for 2018. This week’s challenge is, Something New and we’re featuring Simon Says Stamp exclusive products. It can be a new year, a new baby, a new house…etc. I decided to make a shaker card for the new year.

Also, please welcome our guest designer this month, Amber Sheaves from Pieces of Me. I know you’ll love her style and amazing talent.

New Year Journey Handmade Card

New Year Journey Handmade Card Step 1

Begin with a 4-3/4″ x 5-3/4″ piece of Bristol Watercolor paper and wet the entire piece with water. Smudge Distress Ink onto craft mat and pick up with wet brush and dab onto paper. Dry each color before moving onto the next ink color. I used Tumbled Glass, Mermaid Lagoon and Twisted Citron Distress Inks. Set aside to completely dry.

New Year Journey Handmade Card Step 2

To begin creating the shaker section, cut out the Simon Says Stamp Ring Frame from a 4-3/4″ x 5-3/4″ piece of Neenah Solar White 110 lb. cardstock. We’re working with the leftover outline of the frame but save the white ring frame for another project. Cut another ring frame out of Bazzill Jawbreaker cardstock and keep the actual ring frame for the card as shown above.

New Year Journey Handmade Card Step 3

Rub the Mermaid Lagoon Distress Ink pad onto a craft mat and spritz with water. Run Splatter brush through the ink and water mixture and splatter onto ring frame cutout card panel. Do the same with Twisted Citron Distress Ink. Set aside to dry or dry with heat tool.

New Year Journey Handmade Card Step 4

To attach the blue ring frame to the white ring frame cut out panel, apply Ranger Multi Matte Medium to all sides of the blue ring frame. Lay the cut out panel on a craft mat and press blue ring frame into cutout. The glue will squish out the sides, just dab it with a soft micro towel or rag. Let it set on the craft mat to dry. It will only take a minute or two to dry.

New Year Journey Handmade Card Step 5

I create the shaker section with photo sleeves and a We R Memory Keeper Fuse Tool. Take a small photo sleeve, one that is a little smaller than the card panel and fuse the two sides and bottom together with the Fuse Tool. Place the sequins inside the plastic from the top and then seal the top with the Fuse Tool. To build the card from the bottom up, lay the watercolor panel created in step 1 on a craft mat or table, adhere the shaker section to the watercolor panel using double sided tape. Now take the ring frame panel piece and place a strip of 3M foam tape along all sides of the panel. Remove the backing on the double sided foam tape and apply another layer of foam tape on top of the first pieces of tape. This will give the card enough height to allow the shaker pieces to move around inside the plastic. Adhere the ring frame panel on top of the shaker section to complete the shaker portion.

New Year Journey Handmade Card Final Steps

To finish the card, I paint the edges of the front card panel with Twisted Citron Distress Paint using a dauber applicator. I add some of the circles left over from cutting out the ring frame and add them in random areas on the card. I create the kitty and gorilla from the Simon Says Stamp Gorilla and Sweet Cat Picture Book die sets. To quickly color the animals, I cut them out of cardstock that was inked with Vintage Photo, Gathered Twigs and Ground Espresso Distress Ink. I cut the eyes out of Simon Says Stamp Black cardstock and the ears and nose of the kitty were cut from pink cardstock.  I added some hashtag sentiments from the Tim Holtz Hashtags stamp set that I embossed onto black cardstock with Versamark Embossing Ink and Hero Arts White Embossing Powder. I created the year 2018 using the Simon Says Stamp Game Tile Letters stamp set. Next, I adhered the main card panel onto a 5″ x 7″ piece of Simon Says Stamp Black cardstock.

I hope you enjoyed seeing how I put together this fun shaker card and that you’ll join us on this fun challenge. Remember, you could win a $50 gift voucher to Simon’s wonderful store when you enter. Thanks for spending time with me today and I hope to see your project linked to the challenge!
