Child’s Room/Nursery Home Decor – Gertrude, Winifred and Clarence

Hi Friends! Today I’m sharing a home decor piece I created for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 2 release. This child’s room home decor features the ever adorable colorize characters, Gertrude, Winifred and Clarence. I am so in love with these adorable animals and the minute I saw them I knew just what I wanted to create. When I was a kid I had a room full of stuffed animals. It drove my mother crazy because whenever we went to a store that had stuffed animals I always wanted to get one (or maybe 5). Clarence, Winifred and Gertrude remind me of just a few of the stuffed animals I had when I was growing up and to this day I still have my teddy bear. It’s worn and weathered but only because it was loved so much. Join me below where I try to explain as best I can how I put this all together. Enjoy!

Child's Room Home Decor - Step 1

I being by painting three vignette boxes with a light coat of Antique Linen Distress Paint. I didn’t apply gesso first because I wanted the wood to peek through. If you don’t like that much of a weathered look, be sure to cover the boxes with white gesso first before painting.

Working with one side at a time and one box at a time, I covered the side with collage medium. I placed upper and lower case Tim Holtz Tiny Type letters randomly on the box. I applied another coat of collage medium over top of them and allowed that to completely dry. Next, I colored over the letters with a Walnut Stain Distress Crayon and rubbed the pigment in so it would fill in the crevices around the letters. This draws the letters out and makes them appear as though they have been carved out of the wood. I then dipped my finger in water and removed the pigment from the tops of the letters with my fingertip. I completed this process on all sides of all three boxes.

Creating one animal at a time, I selected all the colors I wanted for that particular animal from Tim Holtz Classic Kraft Stock Paper Stash. I sanded each piece of cardstock with lightweight sandpaper for a distress look before cutting all the pieces.

I completed the same process for all the flowers, greenery and mixed media pieces that I placed in the background. That’s it! This project was so much fun to create and really very easy to put together. Like I’ve said with each of the colorize characters, they come to life as you build them and you can’t help but smile from ear to ear when they’re done.

Below are a few more closeups of my project. Thanks so much for stopping by!
