Happy Monday, everyone! I know, I know, how can Monday be happy? Well, what can help make it happy is to join us for the next Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. This week’s challenge is, Grunge. I’ve created a grunge, but beautiful, background for my card. It’s not as difficult as it looks and I’ll show you how you can create an easy and fun grunge style background for your net project in the tutorial below. Enjoy!
Have you been keeping up with our guest designer, Stacy Hutchinson? She’s amazing and her style is timeless. I’ve really been enjoying each of her projects for our challenge this month and I know you will too. Pop over to her beautiful blog, Tattered Nest Designs to see her latest creation.
To being the background, I choose two Tim Holtz stencils, Hearts and Flourish, and add them to my 4-3/4″ x 6-3/4″ piece of Neenah Desert Storm cardstock using Wendy Vecchi White Embossing Paste. Allow the paste to completely dry.
Now that the paste is completely dry, I smudge Distress Oxide Walnut Stain onto a craft mat and add a little water. I then drag the stenciled cardstock through the ink and water mixture. Allow this layer to completely dry.
I add a deeper color of brown to the card panel by smudging Distress Ink Ground Espresso onto a craft mat and add a little water. I once again drag the stenciled cardstock through the ink and water mixture. Allow this layer to completely dry.
I begin adding shades of red. The first is Distress Oxide Candied Apple. Follow the same process with this color as above. Allow this layer to completely dry.
When the Distress Oxide is dry, I color some of the edges of the stenciled pattern with a Barn Door Distress Crayon in random areas. I smudge the pigment in with my fingertips.
For the next layer, I add Fired Brick Distress Crayon using the same process as above.
Next, I stamp on one of the ledger stamps from the Tim Holtz Ledger Script stamp set in random areas with Vintage Photo Archival Ink.
I got carried away with creating the next steps that I forgot to take step photos but I’ll try to explain without the photos. I took the main card panel above and tore it to almost half way down the middle. I curled one edge over and left the other torn. Underneath my main card panel, I stamped the script image in Vintage Photo Archival Ink onto a piece of Neenah Desert Storm card stock and adhered it to the back of the main card panel so it would peek through.
To complete the card, I inked the edges of the main card panel with Black Soot Distress Ink. I adhered the main card panel onto a 5″ x 7″ piece of Simon Says Stamp Black cardstock. I added a flower that I created using the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals Bigz die. I cut three of the largest petals and inked the petals with Fired Brick Distress Ink. I then inked the edges of each petal with Vintage Photo Distress Ink. I used the Tim Holtz Dot Matrix embossing folder to add texture to the flowers. I created the scrolls from the Tim Holtz Scroll Bigz Die and inked the edges with Ground Espresso and Black Soot Distress Ink, very lightly. I added the word “love” from the Tim Holtz Celebration Words: Script wafer die set which was cut out of Simon Says Stamp Black cardstock. The word “story” is from the Tim Holtz Big Chat sticker set.
I hope you enjoyed seeing how I created a grungy yet beautiful background for my card and that you will join us in this fun challenge. Remember you could win a $50 gift voucher by linking your project to the challenge.
