Tag Background – Halloween

Hi friends! Today I’m sharing a Halloween card I created using the Simon Says Stamp Festive Tags dies which was part of the collaboration for STAMPtember® with Tim Holtz along with the Tim Holtz Tiny Frights stamp set and their coordinating dies from Simon Says Stamp. These tags are the perfect size for background creations and I had a lot of fun putting this card together. I’ll show you how I put it all together in the step-by-step tutorial below.

Let’s begin:

I chose three of the tag designs I wanted to use for this background and cut them out of Distress watercolor cardstock. I spritzed the tags with a bit of water and then spritzed on Distress Rusty Hinge Distress Spray Stain. I continued to spritz and dip the tags into the overspray drying each layer inbetween with a heat tool until I was happy with the outcome. I then edged the tags with Distress Black Soot Distress Ink.

When the tags were completely dry I turned them over and lined them up against a t-ruler making sure they were positioned straight. I taped them together with double sided tape.

Next, I applied Distress Micro Glaze over the tags to make the color pop even more. I find the glaze brings out all the variations in color.

I applied the Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Mini Spellbound stencil from Set #56 in three random areas on the tags with Distress Black Oqaque Texture Paste.

When the texture paste was dry, I splattered on Distress Black Soot Paint all over the tags.

Making the Elements and Characters for the Card

I wanted to anchor the ghost in the background with some circles so I went through my scrap paper pieces that contained Halloween colors and cut out a variety of circle sizes using the Tim Holtz Sizzix Stacked Circles die set. This set is retired but you can use circle punches or other circle dies just so you have a variety of sizes.

For the ghost, I stamped him onto Distress watercolor cardstock with VersaFine Nocturne Ink, cut him out with the coordinating die and added a bit of shading with Distress Lost Shadow Distress Ink.

To create the stars, I spritzed a piece of Distress watercolor cardstock with Flickering Candle Distress Mica Stain.

I stamped the stars onto the cardstock with VersaFina Nocturne ink and sprinkled on some Ranger Black embossing powder. I set the powder with a heat tool and used the coordinating die set to cut out the stars. I only used three of the stars for my card. These stars will cover the holes on the tags.

For the bat, I stamped the image onto a scrap piece of Simon Says Stack Black cardstock with Distress Picket Fence Distress Ink, sprinkled it with Hero Arts white embossing powder and set that with a heat tool. I cut the bat out using its coordinating die.

For the background piece to anchor the tag background, I cut a 4.75″ x 6.75″ piece of Simon Says Stamp Black cardstock and embossed it with the Tim Holtz 3-D Large Entangled embossing folder. I then gently rubbed the Distress Picket Fence Distress Ink pad over the raised areas of the design. When the pigment ink was dry, I adhered the tags to the center. I then added all my elements and a couple of sentiment stamps from the same stamp set. I adhered the entire background piece to a 5″ x 7″ piece of Simon Says Stamp Black cardstock and the card was done!
