Winter Wonderland – Doily Christmas Tree

Hi Everyone! I’m here with another Christmas card and another fun challenge for the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge where our theme is, Christmas/Winter Holidays. This week, I created a dimensional Christmas Tree using a doily die featured against a shimmery winter background. There’s a full tutorial below. Enjoy!

Also, please visit our December guest designer, Valerie-Jael from Bastelmania and stop by her blog to see what she’s created for this week’s challenge. She’s amazing!

Creating the Doily Die Christmas Tree

Cut 4 of the Tim Holtz Doily Die #2, or doily of your choice, out of lightweight white cardstock.

Fold each doily to create sections for the Christmas Tree as shown above.

Attach each piece together starting with the bottom portion working your way to the top.

Using Prima Opal Magic Blue-Gold Acrylic Paint, brush the paint onto the tops and under all the folds of the tree. As you brush on the paint, each layer will curl upwards. This is what magically creates the tree’s dimension. (This particular paint has a beautiful shimmer and shine to it, so it creates a beautiful finish on the tree.)

Here you can see the dimension created by the leaves curling upward from the side and front view. It’s important to use lightweight paper because it is the wetness of the paint and the light weight of the paper that causes the upward curl.

For the tree trunk, I used the Tim Holtz Woodgrain embossing folder. I embossed a piece of Kraft-Core cardstock, sanded it and inked it with Vintage Photo Archival Ink. I then cut out a piece for the trunk choosing a section where I liked the pattern.

To finish the card, I adhered the Doily Tree, that I embellished with Prima Memory Hardware Pearls, to the painted panel along with two small deer from the Tim Holtz Winter Wonderland die set. I added a bit of white gauze to create snow under the tree and deer. The sentiment is from the Tim Holtz Scribbly Christmas stamp set that was stamped onto a small piece of Neenah Solar White 110lb. cardstock inked with Simon Says Stamp Intense Black Ink. I adhered a Tim Holtz Fluted Star on top of the tree. I adhered the focal panel onto a 5-1/4″ x 7-1/4 piece of Tonic Silver Screen Glitter Card. The next layers are made up of a 5-3/4″ x 7-3/4″ piece of Tonic Broken Glass Hand Crafted Embossed Cotton Paper, that I gently distressed, and lastly a piece of black plaid cardstock from the Tim Holtz Christmas Paper Stash set. Below are a few close-up of the card.
