Over the last two weeks I’ve shared projects I’ve created using the Sweet Tweets die set from Tammy Tutterow Designs. For my third project I’ve created a pin cushion and using the die set in a totally different way. Have you ever used a die set and thought you did everything you could with the set only to never use it again? Well, there is a way to get more miles out of each and every die set. Just because a set comes with dies meant for a particular purpose, you can look at them in an entirely different way to create other things. I used the bird die pieces to create several different flowers and the branch and roof top die to create the steams. See the tutorial below and find out how I used these dies in a totally different way. Enjoy!
In the top right corner are the die pieces needed to create the large flower on the pin cushion. I begin by cutting 5 of the bird’s bodies out of floral fabric to be used as petals to create the flower. The flower center is cut from felt.
The flower is formed by laying each petal one on top of the other.
After adding the fifth petal you can see the beautiful flower created using this die.
I attach a small button to the flower center with a needle and thread.
To finish the flower, I sew the flower center to the center of the flower petals.
To create the medium flower, you need to cut five bird tails and one small flower die to create the flower petals and flower center. The dies needed are shown in the top right corner. Again, I cut the petals out of fabric and the center out of felt.
Attach each bird tail together on the slanted edges to create the flower then add the center. Here is the completed flower after attaching everything together.
To create the tulip, you will need three bird feathers from the die in the top right corner. (There are two styles of bird feathers, I used the scalloped feather.)
Lay the petals one on top of the other to form the tulip. I attached these petals with fabric glue.
For the small red and pink flower, I used the small flower die and layered each piece to create a larger flower.
Here you can see how I laid the petal one on top of the other to create an entirely different flower. I attached the petals with fabric glue.
I created a small flower center from one of the actual flower center dies in the set and attached it with fabric glue.
Putting it all together:
I created the leaves and stems from the branch and roof top dies that come in the set. The leaves are cut from the actual leaf dies in the set and all are cut from felt. I created a bird using the dies and cut them from a mixture of the same fabric pieces. Using my sewing machine, I stitched the square center piece to the scalloped piece leaving one side open so I could stuff it with fiberfill. After stuffing the pin cushion, I used my sewing machine to close the fourth side and attached grass that I created cut from one of the trims from the Sew Sweet Sweet Trims die set out of felt. I’m pleased with my pin cushion but I wish I had done some embroidery on the leaves and stems.
I hope you enjoyed seeing how to use some of the dies from this set to create completely different elements for your project. Thank you so much for stopping by and sticking with me to the end.
Cathie, this is darling! I still have some quilt fabrics left somewhere – you’ve inspired me to dig them out and have a play! Beautifully done, my friend!
