Distress Mixology No. 2

Hi friends! I’m back again this week with Distress Mixology. This color palette was inspired by the shabby chic style. It’s a mixture of soft pastels and I think it will be fun to see what I can come up with using this palette. I tend to migrate more to vibrant colors on the darker side like deep fall earth tones so this is really out of my usual comfort zone. That’s the whole reason for this series. I want to broaden my color horizons, so to speak, and this palette does just that for me. I’ve got all the details below. Enjoy!

I have to admit these are not colors I would pull off my shelf and work with together. The chosen colors are Spun Sugar, Shaded Lilac, Antique Linen, Saltwater Taffy and Tattered Rose. I wanted to choose a palette with soft, pastel-like colors because I usually don’t gravitate to those types of colors. This palette, to me, is very soft, feminine and delightfully spring-like. No idea what I’ll do with it but I know I’ll come up with something.

I do all my experiements using the same mediums in all the colors and then I mix it up. Below are all the results.

Distress Oxides Sprays

First up, Distress Oxides Sprays in all the colors. I spray the colors one by one onto a craft media mat smoosh and dab the cardstock through the pigments. I make sure to dry each layer inbetween before moving on to the next color. I like the softness of this combination of colors and how well they blend together.

Distress Spray Stains

This is definiately much brighter than the oxides, which is what I expected. I feel like Antique Linen gets lost in the crowd but it’s little peeps of color here and there are lovely and I really like the outcome.

Distress Oxide Pads

As you can see the Distress Oxide pads do create a different look than the Distress Oxide sprays. There are more defined splatters and sploches and I feel the colors are a little more vibrant with the pads. To get this result, I smoosh the oxides one at a time onto a craft mat and pick the pigment up with a water spritzed piece of cardstock. As always, I make sure to do one color at a time and dry completely between layers. There are some colors you can do at the same time. Just choose the ones you know, when applied together, won’t create mud.

Distress Ink Pads

Now I move onto the Distress Ink pads. I smoosh the inks one at a time onto a craft mat and spritz the cardstock and inks with a bit of water. I then dab the cardstock into the color. I dry the ink before moving onto the next one so I don’t end up with mud. I like the vibrancy of Distress Inks and I feel the results on this one are so pretty.

Distress Paints

This example is using paints only. I feel like the colors blend so well together and the effect is dreamy. Doesn’t it almost look like Monet flowers? This is so pretty! I place a drop of paint onto a craft mat and spritz it with a bit of water then run my fingertips through the paint and water mixture. I do this so I don’t get a blog of paint on the cardstock. I also spritz the cardstock with water before running it through the paint. I complete this process doing one color at a time. I do a combination of running the cardstock through the colors and dabbing the cardstock into the paint and then I dry each layer completely with a heat tool.

Distress Paints, Oxides and Inks Combination

This combination of all the mediums is so pretty. I’m really enjoying using more of the mediums together which is something I rarely did. Why? I’m not really sure. I guess when you just keep doing something the same way over and over, you tend to stick with it. This Distress Mixology series is really going to force me out of my rut and comfort zone all at the same time. How fun is that?!?

Stay tuned to see what I create using the combination of mediums and colors. Thanks so much for sticking with me to the end. I appreciate the time you spend here with me so much! Have a beautifully inky day!
